Michelle Aravena

MICHELLE ARAVENA (Gladys) has appeared on Broadway in the original revival company of A Chorus Line (Tricia and understudy of Diana, Maggie, Bebe, and Connie). Other New York appearances include The Sound of Music at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and Camila at Manhattan Theatre Club. She has performed in the national tours of Mamma Mia (Sophie/first national tour),  Les Miserables (Fantine understudy) and Steel Pier (Bette Becker). Regionally, she has played Anita in West Side Story with Walnut Street Theatre (Philadelphia Critics Award nomination), Tigerlily in Peter Pan and in The Wizard of Oz at Actors Theatre of Louisville and Mistress in Evita at Downtown Cabaret, North Carolina Theatre. Other credits include appearances in the original company of West Side Story at La Scala Opera House in Milan, and appearances at Disney MGM studios and Disney Cruise Lines. Ms. Aravena can also be heard on the cast recording of the Broadway revival of A Chorus Line.

Brandon Bieber

BRANDON BIEBER (Charlie/Chorus) was recently the Assistant Choreographer for Annie, which toured and played Madison Square Garden. He has performed in more than 40 shows at The Muny in St. Louis, including Hello, Dolly!; Oklahoma!; 42nd Street; The Music Man; Crazy for You; Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat; A Chorus Line; Evita; Brigadoon; and more. Other performances include Beauty and the Beast, Grease, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers at Pittsburgh CLO and Bye, Bye Birdie at Stages St. Louis. On TV, Mr. Bieber has appeared on One Life to Live. He is a recent graduate of the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Mr. Bieber is a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association.

Tony DeBruno

TONY DEBRUNO (Hasler/Pop) has appeared in nearly forty productions in eleven seasons at Arizona Theatre Company, including Matt in Talley’s Folly, Honeyman in A Walk in the Woods, Joe Gargery in Great Expectations, Hortensio in The Taming of the Shrew and Antonio in The Tempest. He has worked sixteen seasons at Oregon Shakespeare Festival, performing roles such as Shylock in The Merchant of Venice; Zangler in On the Razzle; Otto Frank in The Diary of Anne Frank; Artie in The House of Blue Leaves; Gloucester in King Lear; Sam in Lips Together, Teeth Apart; Doc Gibbs in Our Town; Charley in Death of a Salesman; Leonato in Much Ado About Nothing; Rabbi Zeizel in Vilna’s Got a Golem and Jake Callahan in Chicago. Other roles at regional theatres include Devery in Born Yesterday at Milwaukee Repertory Theater, and Mitch in David Edgar’s Mothers Against and Ira in Daughters of the Revolution (world premiere) at Berkeley Repertory Theatre and subsequent tour to the Barbican in London.

Sean Patrick Doyle

SEAN PATRICK DOYLE (Helper #1/Chorus) enjoyed a year-long run as Baby John in the Asian/European tour of West Side Story (directed by Joel McKneely) and also appeared in the Asian tour of Fame: The Musical. He recently portrayed Chantal the Songbird in Ogunquit Playhouse’s production of La Cage aux Folles. Other regional credits include the Emcee in Cabaret, Mr. Mistoffelees in Cats andMendel in Fiddler on the Roof. Mr. Doyle has also performed in numerous productions at The Kennedy Center including Leonard Bernstein’s Mass, A Salute to 1940s Broadway (directed by Baayork Lee) and Tchaikovsky’s Maid of Orleans. His film and television credits include Full Grown Men, Chita Rivera’s Kennedy Center Honors tribute (directed by Rob Marshall), Young Lincoln and numerous commercials. Robert Encila

ROBERT ENCILA (Max/Chorus) has performed locally with Borderlands Theater in Mixed Messages, Conjunto and the world premiere of A Visitor’s Guide to Arivaca. Other favorite roles performed locally include Jesus in Godspell, Baz in A Bright Room Called Day andFelix in A Normal Heart. A graduate of the University of Arizona, he toured his native Philippines as a dancer and actor, appearing as Jesus in bi-lingual productions of Jesus Christ Superstar. In 2004, he established Studio Connections, a fine arts center for youth where he teaches acting, voice, piano and guitar. Having directed over forty productions nationally, Mr. Encila is the current director of St. Francis Theatre Ensemble and choir director for St. Matthews Episcopal Church. His new CD of original songs, Second Wind, is available on iTunes.

Kathryn Fraggos

KATHRYN FRAGGOS (Chorus) recently performed the Cat in Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts’ production of Peter and the Wolf. She has also performed as a soloist with dre.dance and The Chase Brock Experience and was one of five U.S. dancers invited to perform in Sicily's Santa Rosalia Festival. She has also appeared as an improvisational character actress at New York's Jekyll and Hyde Club. Ms. Fraggos was a featured dancer in the film Across the Universe. She holds a B.F.A. in dance from Point Park University.

Jeff Guilfoyle

JEFF GUILFOYLE (Joe/Chorus) played the roles of both Sonny and Danny in Arizona Broadway Theatre's production of Grease. His other regional credits include I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change; Rum Tum Tugger in Cats; Johnny Cantone in 1940's Radio Hour and Smudge in Forever Plaid. Mr. Guilfoyle’s appearances with Arizona Repertory Theatre include Captain Walker in The Who's Tommy and the Headwaiter in She Loves Me. Mr. Guilfoyle will be receiving his B.F.A. in Musical Theatre from the University of Arizona in May of 2008.

Susan J. Jacks

SUSAN J. JACKS (Mabel) toured nationally with Doctor Dolittle (as Polynesia the Parrot) and internationally in My One and Only (Mickey). Off-Broadway, she appeared in Forbidden Broadway, Nunsense, Theda Bara and the Frontier Rabbi and Flight of the Lawnchair Man (in the role she created at Goodspeed Musicals). Other regional appearances include Gypsy at Walnut Street Theatre, Our Town at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum at the Cherry County Playhouse (Domina), Gateway Playhouse’s productions of Thoroughly Modern Millie (Mrs. Meers) and Oliver (Widow Corney), and Sister Amnesia in Nunsense II at the La Mirada Playhouse. She has been a company member for nine summers at Mountain Playhouse in Pennsylvania; her favorite roles there include Maggie in 42nd Street, Dottie in Noises Off and Kate in Broadway Bound. Ms. Jacks made her film debut as Tammy the Televangelist in Spike Lee’s Crooklyn.

Sterling Masters

STERLING MASTERS (Chorus) recently appeared in the national tours of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Dance Captain), Thoroughly Modern Millie (Dance Captain) and Fosse. Other regional credits include Louise in Carousel and Kitty in Chicago at Central Piedmont Community College Summer Theatre in North Carolina. Her training includes North Carolina School of the Arts, American Ballet Theatre, The Joffrey Ballet School, Kirov Academy of Ballet and 14 years at Jami Masters School of Dance in Charlotte. Ms. Masters is a Guest Artist and Master Teacher for the Educational Theatre Association and Carolina Dance Masters (Dance Masters of America).

Kelly McCormick

KELLY McCORMICK (Babe Williams) is making her Arizona Theatre Company debut. Ms. McCormick appeared in the national tour of Les Misérables as the Factory Girl and understudied the role of Fantine. Off-Broadway, she appeared in Her Song at Birdland. Regional theatre credits include Fantine in Les Misérables at Pioneer Theatre Company (regional theatre premiere), Martha Jefferson in 1776 at Pittsburgh CLO, Linda in Pal Joey at Prince Music Theater and in Children of Eden at Ford’s Theatre. She also appeared in the New York workshop production of Zhivago. Ms. McCormick has performed as a soloist with Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. She holds her M.F.A. in Drama and M.M. in Voice from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and is a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association.

Kevyn Morrow

KEVYN MORROW (Sid Sorokin) performed in London’s West End premieres of 125th Street (Georgie Blues) and Ragtime (Coalhouse Walker Jr./2004 Laurence Olivier Award nomination). He was a member of the original Broadway companies of The Scarlett Pimpernel, Dream, Smokey Joe's Cafe, and Leader of the Pack (debut), as well as appearing in the 1987 revival of Dreamgirls (C.C. White) and the closing company of A Chorus Line. Regional appearances include The Three Musketeers; Five Guys Named Moe; Music of the Night; Sophisticated Ladies; Thunder Knocking on the Door; Romeo and Juliet-The Musical; The Princess and the Black-Eyed Pea; The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin; Love, Langston; Blue; Stormy Weather and Tambourines To Glory (2005 Helen Hayes Award nomination for Best Actor). On film, Mr. Morrow has been seen in Dark Light, Stayin' Alive, and The Trade. His television credits include recurring roles on Hope and Faith, Ed and One Life to Live, and guest spots on Coach, Murphy Brown, L.A. Law, and as the Host on Kidsworld.

Emily Mulligan Ferry

EMILY MULLIGAN-FERRY (Mae) has performed at many theatres in the Phoenix area, including appearances as Meg Brockie in Brigadoon, Prudie in Pump Boys and Dinettes and Smitty in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (AriZoni Award) at Arizona Broadway Theatre, Anna in The Baltimore Waltz and Miss Jane in Floyd Collins at iTheatre Collaborative and Kathleen in Ragtime at Broadway Palm West. Nationally, she has appeared as Lulu/Betty/Irene in Footloose, Tessie in A Christmas Carol, Amber in Fannie’s Roadhouse and Emma Goldman in Assassins. Ms. Mulligan-Ferry is a graduate of the Illinois State University School of Theatre and when she is not on stage she can be found teaching drama to students at the Mesa Arts Academy.

Joel Newsome

JOEL NEWSOME (Prez) was last seen on Broadway in The Producers. Subsequently, he toured the country in the National Company of The Producers, performing various roles including Leo Bloom and Carmen Ghia. Other Broadway and New York credits include the Tony Award-winning revival of 42nd Street, the Off-Broadway production of Kuni-Leml with The Jewish Repertory Theatre (cast recording) and the first workshop of Jonathan Larson's Rent. Regional and touring credits include the national tour of Steel Pier (Buddy Becker), European concert tour of Leonard Bernstein's music, and performances at Goodspeed Opera House, North Carolina Theatre, Southern Arizona Light Opera Company, Theatre under the Stars, Paper Mill Playhouse, Westchester Broadway Theatre, Florida Studio Theatre, Caldwell Theatre Company, Virginia Musical Theatre and Music Theatre of Wichita, to name a few. Mr. Newsome is a graduate of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

Elizabeth Oates

ELIZABETH OATES (Poopsie/Chorus) is a Senior B.F.A. Musical Theatre Major at the University of Arizona. Her regional credits include productions of Company and Kiss Me, Kate. She has also appeared with Arizona Repertory Theatre in The Who's Tommy, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, She Loves Me and Sideshow.

Carol Schuberg

CAROL SCHUBERG (Chorus/Dance Captain) performed on Broadway in Meet Me in St. Louis and Off-Broadway in Chess. National tours in which she has performed include Cats, The Tap Dance Kid, Barnum and Gigi. She has been seen in regional productions of A Chorus Line (Sheila); Bye, Bye Birdie (Rosie); Gypsy (Electra) and The Late Henry Moss (Conchalla). She was the Assistant Choreographer for Tony Stevens on Sweet Charity for The Istanbul Opera, and for Michael Smuin on film version of The Fantasticks (and appears on screen as the Bearded Lady). Ms. Schuberg has choreographed for The David Letterman Show, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey (The Two Gentlemen of Verona), The Alma Theatre (Avenue X) and New York University (Nine). She teaches and choreographs for The U.S. Performing Arts Camps, Steps Studio in New York and Camp Broadway.

Bob Sorenson

BOB SORENSON (Hines) returns to ATC where he has appeared in I Am My Own Wife, Permanent Collection, Over the Moon, Fully Committed, Ghosts, Art, The Mystery of Irma Vep, How I Learned to Drive, Scapin, Swinging on a Star, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Noises Off. Actors Theatre of Phoenix credits include The Arizona Project, Henry V, Illuminati and Putting It Together, among others. For Phoenix Theatre, he has appeared in Annie; Mister Roberts; I Do, I Do; Rumors and Play It Again, Sam, among others. Mr. Sorenson’s directing credits include More Fun Than Bowling, It Had To Be You, The Bug, Rounding Third and The Complete History of America for Actors Theatre of Phoenix; Steel Magnolias for Phoenix Theatre; Personals, Six Women With Brain Death for Theatre League and Social Security, The Gift Horse, the female version of The Odd Couple and I’m Not Rappaport for Arizona Jewish Theatre Company.

Brandon Tyler

BRANDON TYLER (Helper #2/Chorus) recently performed in Disney's High School Musical with North Shore Music Theatre, Hello Dolly at the Paper Mill Playhouse and played Tumblebrutus (and understudied Mistoffelees) in the national tour of Cats. His concert dance performances include appearances with The Metropolitan Opera Ballet, Collage Dance Collective, Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company and Ballet Austin. On television, he has appeared on Saturday Night Live, Gossip Girl, 30 Rock, Law & Order and Ally McBeal. Mr. Tyler is a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association.

Laura Beth Wells

LAURA BETH WELLS (Brenda) has worked in theatres across the country, from New York to San Francisco. Her favorite roles include Autonoe in The Rockae at Prospect Theater Company (an official selection of the 2007 New York Musical Theatre Festival), Madeline True in LaChuisa's Wild Party at Columbia Stages, Glinda in The Plexiglass Slipper at Asolo Repertory Theatre, Beth in Merrily We Roll Along at Willows Theatre Company, Rizzo in Grease at North Carolina Theatre, Rhetta in Pump Boys and Dinettes at Porthouse Theatre and Gwendolyn in The Importance of Being Earnest at Calaveras Repertory Theatre. She is a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association.

The Creative Team

DAVID IRA GOLDSTEIN (Director) this year celebrates his sixteenth season as artistic director of Arizona Theatre Company. This season he will direct The Pajama Game and the world premiere of Jeffrey Hatcher’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He has directed over 30 mainstage productions for ATC ranging from classics to new plays to musicals including The Pirates of Penzance,  Much Ado About Nothing, My Fair Lady, Valley Song, The Illusion, Side Man, The Mystery of Irma Vep, How I Learned to Drive, Scapin, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, H.M. S. Pinafore and  A Midsummer Night’s Dream, as well as the world premieres of Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure, Inventing van Gogh, Rocket Man, Private Eyes, Over The Moon and Dracula by Steven Dietz, One Crazy Day by Roger Downey, and For Better or Worse by Geoff Hoyle.  As artistic director, he has produced over 150 other mainstage plays, workshops and presentations including acclaimed appearances by the Royal National Theatre of Great Britain and the Theatre Royal Bath. PATRICIA WILCOX (Choreographer) returns to Arizona Theatre Company where she choreographed and created musical staging for The Pirates of Penzance, My Fair Lady, HMS Pinafore, Little Shop of Horrors, Scapin, The Fantasticks, Much Ado About Nothing and Blues in the Night. She is also a co-conceiver of A Marvelous Party, which began at ATC as Oh Coward! and went on to play at Geva Theatre Center, Northlight Theatre (Jeff Award) and The Laguna Playhouse (L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award), among many other venues.  Off-Broadway and regional work includes Children’s Letters to God at The Lamb’s Theatre Company, Blues in the Night (New York revival, the national and international companies, and Thames Television in London; Drama Logue Award and NAACP Image Award nomination), Seussical (national tour), Guys and Dolls (Paper Mill Playhouse), Smokey Joe's Cafe, Camelot, Aida (North Shore Music Theatre), Jesus Christ SuperstarCabaretA Little Night Music (Sacramento Music Circus), Broadway Under the Stars (Bryant Park, NYC), and Bowfire (PBS Special and national tour). Ms. Wilcox has also choreographed for ice skaters Viktor Petrenko, Ilia Kulik and Katya Gordeeva at the 2006 Winter Olympics and 2006 and 2007 World Championships. 

CHRISTOPHER McGOVERN (Musical Director/Conductor) has worked Off-Broadway on That’s Life (Outer Critics Circle nomination), The Jazz Singer, Sheba, The Fishkin Touch, Identical Twins and Totie, on the national tours of Fame and The Presidents with Rich Little and internationally as arranger for Disney Worldwide (The Lion King/Hong Kong and Aladdin/Tokyo). He is the Author/Composer of Lizzie Borden (American Stage, Stoneham Theatre/Boston, Goodspeed Musicals), Crash Club (Cherry County Playhouse), Backwards in High Heels (Florida Stage), Roswell (Florida Stage/1st Stage New Play Festival this spring) and many original songs. His favorite regional credits include Sisters of Swing (Carbonell nomination), Beehive, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Little Shop of Horrors, Godspell, Grease, World Goes ‘Round, Spitfire Grill, Last Five Years, I Love a Piano and A Marvelous Party. He has worked as producer/arranger/orchestrator and songwriter on recordings by Tony-nominees Rebecca Luker (Leaving Home), Susan Egan (Coffee House, Winter Tracks) and Alison Fraser (Men in My Life). Mr. McGovern has performed in concert with Susan Egan (national tour including Carnegie Hall), Karen Mason, Liz Callaway, Roslyn Kind, Jason Graae and many others.

BILL FORRESTER (Scenic Designer) designed ATC’s productions of Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure, The Pirates of Penzance, Oh Coward!, Much Ado About Nothing, My Fair Lady, Art, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, Valley Song, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Dracula and Shadowlands. He has designed settings for many theatres across the nation, including Alliance Theatre, ACT Theatre, Northlight Theatre, Geva Theatre Center, The Empty Space, Denver Center Theatre Company, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Intiman Theatre, Portland Center Stage, Tacoma Actors Guild, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Honolulu Theatre for Youth, Yale Repertory Theatre, and Utah Shakespearean Festival.

LINDSAY W. DAVIS (Costume Designer) most recently designed A Little Night Music for Los Angeles Opera (L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award). Previous collaborations with David Ira Goldstein include Pirates of Penzance at Arizona Theatre Company and Guys and Dolls at Kansas City Repertory Theatre. Regionally, he has designed for Goodman Theatre, Huntington Theatre Company, Alliance Theatre, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Arena Stage, The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, The Cleveland Play House and ACT Theatre. He has been an Associate Designer at The Metropolitan Opera, as well as designing for New York City Opera’s televised production of A Little Night Music. Mr. Davis has designed musicals in Japan and Korea, opera in France and multiple shows in London. His awards include two Jeff Awards and a New York Drama Desk Award for the original Broadway production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Other honors include a Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award, a South Florida Critics Award, a San Francisco Bay Area Critics Award and two Helen Hayes Award nominations. Designing for the Rockettes of Radio City Musical Hall remains Mr. Davis’ favorite project. A graduate of Harvard, he is an Associate Professor of Costume Design for the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

JOHN McLAIN (Lighting Designer) returns to ATC having previously designed The Pirates of Penzance, Over the Moon and Much Ado About Nothing. He has designed lighting for opera, Las Vegas and theatre, including designs for every major regional theatre in the country. Mr. McLain has also designed lighting for national tours of The Sound of Music, Annie, The Wizard of Oz, Ice Capades, Broadway on Ice, The Wiz, Fiddler on the Roof, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Rugrats, The King and I, Camelot, Dreamgirls, Bombay Dreams, High School Musical and the international tour of Porgy and Bess. He has designed for the Lido in Paris, numerous productions in Reno and Las Vegas, the current Jubilee at Bally’s, the Spoleto Italy Festival production of War and Peace, as well as designs for Peter Allen and the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall and Leonard Bernstein’s Mass for the tenth anniversary of The Kennedy Center. For seventeen seasons he has been Resident Designer for the Pittsburgh CLO.

ABE JACOB (Sound Designer) returns to ATC where he was Sound Designer for The Pirates of Penzance, The Fantasticks, 5 Guys Named Moe, The Gershwins’ Fascinating Rhythm, HMS Pinafore and My Fair Lady. He pioneered and introduced the field of sound design in Broadway theatre. His original designs for musical theatre include the Broadway productions of Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar, Pippin, Chicago, Sgt. Pepper, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, A Chorus Line, Gilda Radner Live, Dancin’, Beatlemania, Evita, Cats, Big Deal and Black and Blue. A native of Tucson, his initial contribution to the performing arts was the creation of the concert sound for such legendary artists as Jimi Hendrix; The Mamas and the Papas; Peter, Paul and Mary; and the historic rock celebration, The Monterey Pop Festival. Mr. Jacob is the Resident Designer at New York City Opera in Lincoln Center’s New York State Theatre.

PETER BEUDERT (Projections Designer) returns to Arizona Theatre Company where he designed the scenery for Wit in 2001. He is a Professor of Theatre at the University of Arizona School of Theatre Arts where he has designed scenery for many productions, including Henry IV, Parts I & II; The Cider House Rules; Cabaret; Arcadia and Sunday in the Park with George, as well as designing the projections for The Who’s Tommy. His professional design work includes numerous plays and operas in Chicago, Detroit, New York and Paris. Mr. Beudert is the author of the book “Scenic Art for the Theatre” with Susan Crabtree, now in its second edition. He is currently researching a book on 19th-century scenic painting at the Paris Opera. Mr. Beudert is a member of United Scenic Artists.

GLENN BRUNER (Production Stage Manager) is in his eleventh season at ATC where he has stage managed, among many others, Touch the Names, Molly’s Delicious, Twelfth Night, Bad Dates, Pride and Prejudice, The Pirates of Penzance, Copenhagen, The Fantasticks, Much Ado About Nothing, 2 Pianos 4 Hands and the world premieres of Steven Dietz’s Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure, Rocket Man, Inventing van Gogh and Over the Moon. A stage manager since 1985, Mr. Bruner has worked at Kansas City Repertory Theatre, Alley Theatre, Dallas Theater Center, Pasadena Playhouse, Center Stage, Studio Arena Theatre, Maine’s Portland Stage Company and Casa Mañana Musicals in Fort Worth. He was the Assistant Stage Manager for the world premiere of On the Waterfront at The Cleveland Play House, and Production Stage Manager for the off-Broadway premiere of Alan Ayckbourn’s Season’s Greetings. Mr. Bruner has also been the voice for many radio and television commercials and was an announcer for Texas Public Radio in his hometown of San Antonio. Mr. Bruner has been a member of Actors' Equity Association since 1981.

BRET TORBECK (Assistant Stage Manager) stage managed Arizona Theatre Company’s production of Crowns. He was Production Stage Manager for the new musical Miracle Brothers, by Kirsten Childs at the Vineyard Theatre in New York.  As a regular Stage Manager for Seattle Repertory Theatre, his favorite shows have included Restoration Comedy, The Constant Wife, Take Me Out (West Coast tour), The Time of Your Life (also at American Conservatory Theater), Topdog/Underdog, The Triumph of Love, In Real Life, Jar the Floor and Wit.  In 2001-02, he stage managed the national tour of Proof.  Mr. Torbeck has also worked at The Old Globe, Long Wharf Theatre, Pittsburgh Public Theater, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Alley Theatre and ACT Theatre, and has stage managed special event projects for Microsoft, Starbucks, Apple, and the Seattle Mariners.
