TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

America Plays!

AMERICA PLAYS! Celebrating Great American Stories

“AMERICA PLAYS! Celebrating Great American Stories” is a five-year project that includes expanded enrichment activities for ATC’s audience members.  In addition to ATC’s post-show discussion series, the Education Department will host a series of dramatic readings and reader’s theatre events at bookstores in Tucson and Phoenix, book clubs discussions, pre-show lectures, actor ‘meet-and-greets,’ as well as a Mock Trial with actors and members of the legal community.  These free events throughout the Tucson and Phoenix metropolitan areas will inform and delight our patrons, help our community to connect to both the literature and the production and allow for interaction between ATC staff and artists and the audience.

MOCK TRIAL
The ‘mock trial’ demonstrates how the legal system of 1935 Alabama failed the needs of Tom Robinson.  As the actors perform the trial scene from To Kill a Mockingbird, lawyers and judges illustrate to the audience how the legal system proved unsuccessful and biased for a black man in 1935.  These legal professionals will also compare the literature to today’s judicial system, using examples to which the audience can connect.  The 'mock trial'will serve as an anchor event of the AMERICA PLAYS! project and will increase awareness of this literature and why it is still relevant in today’s society.  This event is free and open to the public.
