EDUCATING ARIZONA

ATC Guest Artists in Arizona Classrooms

Each year, ATC’s education department looks for ways to reach more young people.  With a season that is full of educational shows and opportunities, Samantha, Jenny, Alison, Sara and Jana have worked to create new ways to provide teachers with opportunities to integrate our season of dramas, comedies, musicals, and literary classics into both English and Theatre classrooms.  Through collaboration with teachers and artists, ATC’s Education Department has developed three new Artist-in-Residence programs that explore the literary merits, Arizona State Language Arts Standards, and dramatic content of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, To Kill a Mockingbird and six of Shakespeare’s plays that are most frequently taught in classrooms throughout Arizona.

These multi-day residencies will be interactive for the participants.  Students will create improvised scenes, develop characters that are both good and evil, collaborate with actors to re-direct the climaxes of plays, demonstrate understanding of vocabulary with body and face, and perform dramatic scenes to illustrate dramatic intention both vocally and physically.  Trained teaching artists, actors, and ATC education staff will be present to guide students on these journeys of discovery, guiding students as they delve deeper into the literature and bring these classic works to life in their classrooms, lecture halls and auditoriums. As part of the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and To Kill a Mockingbird residencies, participants will round out their experiences when they attend student matinee performances held on the Arizona Theatre Company stage in  Tucson or Phoenix.

Additionally, ATC is proud to offer a wide selection of Master Classes to be presented in theater classrooms or in extracurricular drama programs. Three years ago, ATC Education staff members were able to teach workshops to eager theatre students in the Phoenix area through a generous grant from the Blank Foundation.  Based on the success of these initial workshops, the ATC Education Department concluded that we would like to continue to cultivate these connections with both students and teachers.  As a result, ATC has developed thirteen different Master Classes that range from basic acting to more advanced classes in directing, character development, and musical theatre techniques.

When teachers open their doors to an ATC guest artist, their students won’t want class to end. Utilizing creative warm-ups, exercises and activities, these workshops are not only exciting for students but provide cultural enrichment and added educational value.
