NEWS OF ATC's FRIENDS AND SPONSORS

Wasserstein Grows!
The Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust has awarded ATC a grant of $17,000 to expand the Wasserstein Project, exposing high school students from underserved areas to the theatre and performing arts. Based on an arts education model developed by renowned playwright Wendy Wasserstein (The Heidi Chronicles - 1989 Tony and Pulitzer prize winner) this unique project brings high school students to performances of Arizona Theatre Company, Ballet Arizona, Arizona Opera, ASU Gammage, UA Presents, the Phoenix Symphony, Tucson Symphony and others. With journal exercises, post-show group discussions, often with artists, journal activities and in-school workshops, the Wasserstein Project challenges students’ notions of themselves, the performing arts, the world around them and how they all interrelate. Looking to nurture future generations of performing arts patrons, this support will expand the number of participants from one group of 14 to six groups of 15 each, for a total of 90 students. "During her life, Nina supported programs that brought cultural and educational opportunities to children and adults who otherwise might not have realized such experiences," explained Trustee Carol Peden Schilling. "The Trust is pleased to be a part of this exciting project."

SmithGroup brings creativity and ingenuity to Herberger
ATC thanks to SmithGroup, a leading architecture, engineering, interiors and planning firm, for their support as Underwriter for the January 20th Phoenix performance of Ella. Unique in its approach to architecture, SmithGroup prides itself on relationships that support ideas which resonate with their clients and the community. The creative development of design must consider the relationship of the architecture and the human presence, combining purpose, efficiency, innovation, creativity and sustainability to produce meaningful community spaces for today and the future. SmithGroup's design philosophy is reflected in their projects: the recently completed University of Arizona - College of Medicine and the Arizona State University Downtown Campus. IGC/TGen, completed in 2004, will soon be joined by the Arizona Biomedical Collaborative (ABC), while Papago Gateway Center takes shape in Tempe. The longest continually operating architecture and engineering firm in the U.S., SmithGroup's approach to design and community can be accessed via their website at www.smithgroup.com

The Royal Elizabeth Bed & Breakfast Inn
 – a definite treat!

Oftentimes, ATC has the need for additional guest artist and staff housing in Tucson. The Royal Elizabeth Bed & Breakfast Inn, located just three doors down from the Temple of Music and Art in Tucson, has graciously supported ATC with this housing need during this season. But more importantly, owners Chuck Bressi and Jeff DiGregorio have provided ATC artists and staff who stay with them a truly one-of-a-kind experience. On the National Register of Historic Places, this 1878 mansion was crafted in a Victorian style out of the then-popular adobe structure and has been meticulously renovated. Original moulding designs, hardwood floors and period décor are just some of the unique details that welcome visitors. Chuck and Jeff are dedicated to providing for your every need. Delight in the historic warmth of their home and enjoy their two-course gourmet breakfast proudly served each morning with their thoughtful and thorough personal service. Wherever you’re from, a stay at the Royal Elizabeth is a treat unlike any other. Look for the Royal Elizabeth to be Opening Night Performance Underwriter for of I Am My Own Wife at the Temple of Music and Art on March 9.

Building Experience, Building Relationships
This season, ATC has begun efforts to build not just evenings of entertainment, but opportunities for distinct experiences at the theatre. Creating unique partnerships that involve both philanthropy and sponsorship has brought together a high quality theatre experience with a high quality retail experience….

Molina Fine Jewelers, in partnership with the National Corporate Theatre Fund sponsored the opening night performance of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night at the Herberger Theatre Center in Phoenix on Saturday, October 7. Beautiful and unique items from the Molina collection, along with a champagne reception highlighting the diversity and mystique of diamonds made for a showcase event that created both additional presence for Molina across the ATC audience and added value to the theatre-going experience. Continuing this great partnership, Molina also sponsored the opening night of Souvenir on February 10 in Phoenix. Many thanks to the entire team at Molina Fine Jewelers for adding a beautiful accent to our 40th Anniversary Season!

Steinway of Phoenix and Steinway Piano Gallery in Tucson provided on-stage piano support for our productions of 2 Pianos 4 Hands, Ella and Souvenir. Both guest artists and audiences alike commented on the quality and clarity of the music. Our guest artists, in particular, were elated to be playing on such quality instruments – amongst the best they’ve ever worked with! Many thanks to our friends at both these Steinway dealers for helping us with this special support.

Charting the financial future of ATC
The Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust has recently awarded ATC a $250,000 grant to support a permanent cash operating reserve. While production, program and administrative expenses for ATC are constant throughout the season, revenue is a function of ticket sales and philanthropy. Both of these have higher and lower periods of activity throughout the season. The Piper grant will help ensure efficient cash flow, particularly during the first quarter, when as many as three productions are in operation, which precedes annual subscription renewals. The Trust supports cash operating reserve grants because they allow arts and cultural organizations to avoid borrowing costs during times when ticket sales and contributed revenue do not provide sufficient reserves; returning the entire grant amount to a restricted account for 30 days each year assists organizations with budgeting and fiscal stability.
