Michael Woodward, program coordinator of Wingspan’s Southern Arizona Gender Alliance, which provides support and advocacy services for transgender people, concurs. “Even in the face of grave danger, Charlotte von Mahlsdorf was compelled to be true to herself first and foremost. Her life illustrates the many challenges faced by millions of people who do not fit neatly into society’s expectations of what is male and what is female.”

“While others around her perished at the hands of the Nazis and, later, the Communists, Charlotte found the courage and strength one must have to live openly as a cross-dresser in a society that is actively hostile toward diversity and non-conformity. Charlotte’s courage to be herself under extremely adverse circumstances is a gift each of us can use in our lives." Woodward added.
