I AM MY OWN WIFE

WORDS FROM WINGSPAN

I Am My Own Wife is an important work--not just a dramatic piece, but a great tool for promoting understanding about the lives of transgender people. We applaud ATC’s efforts to educate its patrons as well as entertain them,” said Kent Burbank, Executive Director of Wingspan, Tucson’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community center.

C. Michael Woodward, program coordinator of Wingspan’s Southern Arizona Gender Alliance, which provides support and advocacy services for transgender people, concurs. “Even in the face of grave danger, Charlotte von Mahlsdorf was compelled to be true to herself first and foremost. Her life illustrates the many challenges faced by millions of people who do not fit neatly into society’s expectations of what is male and what is female.”

“While others around her perished at the hands of the Nazis and, later, the Communists, Charlotte found the courage and strength one must have to live openly as a cross-dresser in a society that is actively hostile toward diversity and non-conformity. Charlotte’s courage to be herself under extremely adverse circumstances is a gift each of us can use in our lives." Woodward added.

Wingspan is Southern Arizona's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community center. Wingspan is a non-profit, charitable organization that serves Tucson and Southern Arizona. For more information, click here
