Deadline for submissions for the 2007 Award is
December 30, 2006
Arizona Theatre Company announces the selection of dark
play or stories for boys by Carlos Murillo as the winner
of the 2006 National Latino Playwriting Award. Murillo was
awarded $1,000. The runner-up for the award is The Book
Club Play by Karen Zacarias.
In dark play or stories for boys, 14 year old Nick
finds himself in thrall with the thrilling world of deception,
fluid identity and sexual license offered by the chat rooms
of the World Wide Web. When Nick takes on the persona of Rachel
to lure 16 year old Adam, Nick finds himself caught in the
confusing space between the real and the virtual - where the
fictional Rachel's feelings become indistinguishable from
his own. When Nick and Adam finally come face to face in the
real world, the consequences are devastating. dark play
or stories for boys was originally developed at the UCSB
Summer Theatre Lab under the artistic direction of Naomi Lizuka.
A Chicago-based playwright and director, Carlos Murillo previously
won the National Latino Playwriting Award for Never Whistle
While You're Pissing. A visiting professor at the Theatre
School of DePaul University, Carlos has had his work produced
and developed nationwide. Unfinished American Highwayscape
#9 & 32 recently premiered at Theatre @ Boston Court
in Los Angeles. Mimesophobia (or before and after)
was produced at Arielle Tepper's 2005 NYC Summer Play Festival
after being workshopped at the J.A.W. West Festival, South
Coast Repertory's Hispanic Playwrights Project, and elsewhere.
Some other plays include the following: A Human Interest
Story (or the Gory Details and All) (New City Chicago,
Best New Plays of 2004, Nominated for Best Production of a
Drama by the Austin Critics Table), Offspring of the Cold
War, Patron Saint of the Nameless Dead, Schadenfreude, Near
Death Experiences with Leni Riefenstahl, Never Whistle While
You're Pissing, and Subterraneans.
In Karen Zacarias' The Book Club Play, as the cameras
roll, a tight knit book club dissolves when a brilliant, yet
annoying, new member joins the group.
Karen Zacarias won the 2004 National Latino Playwriting Award
for Mariela in the Desert, which won the 2006 Francesca
Primus Award, the 2005 TCG/AT&T First Stages Award, and

Sins of Sor Juana won Outstanding New Play at the 2000
Helen Hayes Awards and will have its Spanish premiere at Gala
Hispanic Theatre in Washington, D.C. The Book Club Play, will
have a public reading at The Guthrie Theater this fall.
