EDUCATION
AT ATC
Summer on Stage 2006 marks the 10 year anniversary of this
education program that began in 1997 with a group of twelve
students performing Under Milkwood at the Temple
of Music and Art. The program has grown considerably throughout
the years with a total of 47 students participating in Summer
on Stage 2006. With so many students, the program was able
to bring three productions to the stage for a total of six
shows.
Summer on Stage is a five week acting course for high school
students. To apply, students must submit an application along
with an essay and a letter of reference from a teacher. If
accepted, students must be prepared to meet the high expectations
of the program. The course begins with reading and studying
the plays being produced. Students are given material from
the shows and instructors assist them with audition preparation.
Students must perform an acting, singing and dance audition
for all the directors. Once the shows are cast, rehearsals
can begin. The following two weeks consist of morning classes
and rehearsals in the afternoon. The students are offered
a variety of classes to challenge them in all areas of theatre;
such as, movement, dance, production, physical comedy, stage
combat, script analysis and character development. The final
two weeks are dedicated to full day rehearsals. The students
are fully submersed into the production process working with
professionals from Arizona Theatre Company. The program is
supported by ATC’s production staff, headed up by David
Cap, ATC production manager.
The program gives students the opportunity to learn from
a variety of theatre professionals. This year’s instructors
were Mark McCarthy, Lisa Rothschiller and Eric Langmeyer.
Mr. McCarthy is a professional actor, director and educator
from Chicago. Ms. Rothschiller, originally from Tucson, is
the co-founder of Defiant Theatre Company and also worked
as an instructor at the University of Arizona. Mr. Langmeyer
is a teacher, director and choreographer at a local fine arts
academy in Chicago. He also served as the Fine Arts Chair
at the school.
The program primarily serves high school students who want
to learn about acting. However, Summer on Stage has something
to offer college students interested in a future as theatre
educators. Students from the University of Arizona School
of Theatre Arts serve as teaching assistants for the program,
working alongside the instructors to assist them in their
daily classroom functions. In addition, when the shows move
to the production realm, the UA students serve as stage managers,
giving them the opportunity to work closely with theatre professionals
to learn the finer points of play production.
Summer on Stage is a collaboration with the University of
Arizona School of Theatre Arts. Samantha Wyer, associate artistic
director, serves as the artistic advisor and Bobbi McKean
from the UA School of Theatre Arts is the program consultant.
