William Shakespeare’s TWELFTH NIGHT
Arizona Theatre Company has been selected as one of thirty-six schools and theatre companies to participate in the National Endowment for the Arts’ acclaimed Shakespeare for a New Generation program. Shakespeare for a New Generation, part of the Arts Endowment's Shakespeare in American Communities initiative, specifically targets middle and high school students. ATC’s education department is working closely with schools in Santa Cruz County as well as regions in Northern Arizona to target large populations or low-income, Latino and Native American students.
Hundreds of additional students will attend ATC’s production of TWELFTH NIGHT and receive special in-class workshops to enhance their experience with support from a $25,000 NEA grant. TWELFTH NIGHT will serve as a wonderful introduction to students who have never seen, or seldom experienced, a professional Shakespeare production. In conjunction with the performance, we will travel across the state to bring workshops in the works of Shakespeare and his language. Following these workshops, students will attend a performance of TWELFTH NIGHT. Finally, ATC will revisit each school, offering follow-up training and insights..
Schools from the Navajo Nation in the north to Nogales in the south are excited to participate in this thrilling educational opportunity. Among the groups that have signed up to join ATC on this venture are Baboquivari School on the Tohono O’odham Nation, Chinle High School on the Navajo Nation, Parker High School on the Colorado River Indian Reservation, and the Young Artists of Santa Cruz County. ATC is deeply grateful to the National Endowment for the Arts for this wonderful new outreach program.
